Dark evenings, flurries of snow, a nice deep breath at the end of a long day, a soft, warm kitty curled up on my lap, music, memories, and a warm cup of tea— for the little blessings and the peace they bring, O God, I give you thanks. “We are never more than one grateful thought away from peace of the heart.” ~Brother David Steindl-Rast
God, I give you thanks For communication and validation Expressed without the restraints of words, For the nod of a head, an empathetic groan, For a well-timed hug, For eye contact that seems to hold another’s story in loving embrace, For silly exchanges Emanating a more profound joy, For tears flowing from a place deep within. I so often find you in the wordless moments, God. And these moments feed my soul.
When I awaken, May I face the dawn, Receive your grace, Revive my soul, And set out in faith and prayer. And, when I set out, May I let you lead me To where I need to be, To work you call me to do, To people, connections, and community. And, when the day is done, May I really retreat— Resting in your presence, Releasing my cares, Resigning myself to a deep and peaceful sleep. And, when I drift off to sleep, And my body heals, My mind processes, And my spirit dreams, May I surrender to that blessed moment. And when I awaken, Again and again, Moment by moment, Day by day, May I live a song of gratitude. O Generative Spirit, Giver of Life, Source of Connection, Divine Love, I offer my heartfelt thanks. Amen.
God, I give thanks for the dear woman Who taught me to look for the heavenly here, To see the sacred, the good, the eternal in the now, And to rejoice and give credit where it’s due. “We need not wait for heavenly blessings," she'd say "They come to us each day.” “So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven” (Phillips Brooks).
Three Prayerful Pauses Upon Waking God, sometimes I struggle to sleep in the morning. Sometimes I jump right out of bed. Sometimes I sleep peacefully, relishing in a time of rest. And other times, I awake with a headache, feeling groggy, and unready to meet the day. Today, I awake and pause, regardless of how I have arrived at this point. I pause, breathe in and say thanks for another day and this gift of life. Midday God, as I go about my day, may I grow ever more aware Of your Spirit of Goodness weaving its way through My life and the world beyond it. Before Sleeping As I prepare to go to sleep, O God, I give thanks for the special moments of the day. May they be for me a bedtime blessing to hold throughout the night; And may they motivate me in the morning, To give thanks and to seek again.
A Prayerful Response to Matthew 7:7-11 Spirit of God, Giver of Discoveries, I am reminded of all the times when you’ve met my inquiry with insight and my endless searching with interesting findings of one kind or another. And God, I am also reminded of how often I encounter the unexpected-- The times when you offer me that which I didn’t even know I was seeking. How wonderful! How puzzling. How curious. God of unexpected gifts, thank you. Thank you for keeping my sense of mystery alive. Amen.
Let us listen to your voice within us O God, help us hear your call, and Value the wisdom in that still small voice, which Expresses your desire for us Let us respond to your prompting guidance Only saying yes in response to your call to Value others as we value ourselves— Expressing your love through it all Let us rejoice in the work of your Spirit Offering praise to you, O God, and Voicing our sincerest expressions of thanks Every day and always. Amen.
