I have all sorts of thoughts, O God. My days have been full. My mind has been active. I’m well aware of the work that lies ahead. I have all sorts of thoughts, O God. But, I pray I can set them aside, At least for a period of time, And just listen. O God, help me listen. Help me listen for you. Help me listen to you. Help me hear your guidance, Your grace.
Gracious God, in the course of our daily lives, we hear many different voices: work, family, and many other responsibilities call out to us. And, we let our noisy lives desensitize us to the sound of your call. Forgive us, we pray, for the times we were deaf to the sound of your voice in a stranger or friend. Forgive us, God, for the times we ignored the voice of the Spirit calling from within us. Forgive our failure to listen, Lord, and remind us to listen again. Help us hear with discerning ears, so we may respond in faith and love. Amen
God, I pray for tomorrow’s conversations: The ones with loved ones, and the ones with people I’ve only just met. The ones I hold within myself, And the ones that need no words at all. O God, help me listen deeply For your voice in loved ones and strangers. And God, may I be so attuned To your Spirit’s sweet song within me. Amen.
Trees in the Wind Strong winds make their entrance, and Who listens but the trees? They know just where the wind travels And how to move along. When others are resisting, Fighting and feeling the blow, The trees embrace the moving force. In a dynamic dance, they respond. When inspiration makes an entrance, Who listens to its song? Who follows the Creative Spirit? Who embraces and responds? Not those who live in fear, I’d say, Nor those who shut out the Divine; But those who choose to hear the call And like trees in the wind, respond.
Sit quietly with your feet flat on the floor and your hands on your thighs. Pay attention to your breathing. When you feel calm, turn your hands over so the back of your hands are resting on your legs and your palms are facing upward. As you inhale, pray “I am listening, O God,” and as you exhale ask, “Where will you send me?” You may choose to offer it once or in a repeated pattern that follows the rhythm of your breath.
God of Wisdom, who does give us
Gifts we do not always see,
You are with us in this season.
Help us to wait, and look, and be.
In your Spirit, move us daily
To respond in your love and light
And as we wait in the darkness of evening.
Help us to hear you both day and night. Amen.
(This prayer can be sung to the tune of Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus [HYFRYDOL])
God, with my mind fixed on going to bed at the end of this long day, I have prepared my body for this goal. I’ve brushed my teeth, washed my face, climbed into cozy pajamas, and crawled under the blankets on my bed. Now, I pause and prepare my soul through prayer, meditation, petitions, and praise; and I also pause to listen.
I trust you hear this prayer, O God, you who is so close. Am I listening and willing to hear from you? This is my evening contemplation.
