Most Gracious God, O hear our prayer. Reveal your Spirit among us. In times of happiness and despair, Let lasting joy fill and hold us. We see a world of pain, where wounds obscure your goodness. You see your unfolding reign of healing, grace, and justice. This prayer can be sung to the tune of GREENSLEEVES.
O God, show us how to be faithful when time flies by, and tasks add up, and traditions lose their meaning. May we be open to your Spirit, So familiar words ring true. Let us find honest refrains, And not just adopt last year’s joy. Let us be present, alive, and not lost in traditions gone by. God, there’s so much meaning in this season, And yet so much we do not see. In the days and weeks ahead, Inspire us to dig deeper and reflect on what’s good, just, noble and true. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
A prayer after reading Luke 3:1-6 God, I like to feel prepared, organized, ready. I try to stay focused, work diligently, and prepare, So that I do my job well. In my head, my job well done will benefit others and please you. And I think, to some extent, that’s true. But God, I also recognize that I want to feel prepared to help calm my anxiety, to cling to some illusion of control, and to try to avoid embarrassment. Yet in this season, O God, you call us to prepare Not so we feel less anxious, not so we avoid embarrassment, or so we look good. In this season and beyond, You call us to prepare for your sake, so you may be known, So a pathway to your people may be clear; so that your spirit may freely move in, through, and all around us. God, in this Advent season, may I shift my focus, turning my attention to you and preparing for your hope, peace, joy, and love to flourish in this world. This is my prayer. Amen.
God, I give you thanks For communication and validation Expressed without the restraints of words, For the nod of a head, an empathetic groan, For a well-timed hug, For eye contact that seems to hold another’s story in loving embrace, For silly exchanges Emanating a more profound joy, For tears flowing from a place deep within. I so often find you in the wordless moments, God. And these moments feed my soul.

This meditation can be sung to the tune of Let All Mortal Flesh (PICARDY) Let all weary souls find a pathway To a place where hope endures Not a path toward fleeting wishes But toward a persisting lure Drawn to goodness dancing in the dark and dim Hope and Guiding Light shine again. Let all humankind find compassion— Healing hate’s deep festering wounds, Walking in the paths of nonviolence, Standing for what’s sacred and good. Hear our prayer, O Lord, revive us for the task To live out your peace in this world. Let all God’s creation together Join in a most joyous refrain Singing of the goodness that’s rising Singing amidst hardship and pain Good and gracious God, supply us with the tone. Let us make your Spirit known. Let us all find loving kindness And pursue compassionate ways Giv’n to us by our Holy Maker Born in us again and again. God’s enduring love for us will never fade God with us forever, always.
A crowd singing together, A smile shared between strangers, A team parading in victory, Laughter shared among friends, Good news spreading far and wide Gratitude too great to be contained… Joy needs companions to reach its full potential. Joy flourishes in the context of community. God, you call us to be a community Where the good news spreads and joy flourishes. As we draw nearer to Christmas, help us live into that call.
God, I feel the season speeding ahead And the temptation to get swept away with it. I’m inclined to hold my many to-dos tightly in my hand, and I feel time is more of a competitor than a friend. God, I feel the season speeding ahead And I want to resist it. Help me resist it. Help me seek purpose over productivity And joy over efficiency, so I may savor the moments of this season, yes! …and attend to your wondrous work.
Let all God’s creation together Join in a most joyous refrain, Singing of the goodness that’s rising, Singing amidst hardship and pain. Good and gracious God, supply us with the tone. Let us make your Spirit known. This meditation can be sung to the tune of Let All Mortal Flesh (PICARDY)
This prayer can be sung to the tune of O Come, O Come Emmanuel (VENI EMMANUEL) O Source of Hope, supply us with the grace To see the places where your love resides, And when we see, O God, help us know That you are moving in our broken lives. With us, through us, your loving presence grows And gives us hope in what the future holds. O Source of Love, supply us with the grace To be like Jesus in this world of pain To love and let your goodness be known Responding with compassion from our souls In words, in deeds, in all the ways we live May we extend the healing love you give. O Source of Joy, supply us with the grace To sense your presence in this moment now, So we may come to know deep within The blessings of Emmanuel With us, in life, in happiness and grief “God with us” is our joy and our belief. O Source of Peace, supply us with the grace To see the sin that sharpens our divides And meet the hate and pain with your love, So we may join your reconciling song. The world, our life, is riddled with dis-ease But with your spirit we may foster peace.
